Alkaline water is here

Alkaline water? For those of you who haven't heard of it, this might seem a little weird. After all, water is supposed to be the one...well...neutral substance there is, right? Well, not anymore. Alkaline water is now a thing, and there are a lot of claims to go along with it. Even in Trinidad and Tobago, the Blue Waters company has launched their line of alkaline water. Today I wanted to find out just what is being said about it. Here is an overview of this new water trend.

What is alkaline water?
Alkaline, which is the opposite of acidic, is a term indicating a substance's pH level. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 0 being most acidic, and 14 being most alkaline. Water, or at least the "normal" kind, has a pH of 7. Alkaline water, on the other hand, has a pH between 8 and 9, giving it its name.

What can it do?
The most common benefit associated with this type of water is being able to sooth acid reflux because of its ability to kill pepsin, a main cause of acid reflux. Claims also suggest that it can help boost energy and metabolism, cleanse the colon, support the immune system, promote weight loss and even help fight cancer. However, like healing crystals, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims

Is it harmful?
While it is generally considered safe to consume, some sources suggest that it can be harmful in certain cases. For example, the minerals in alkaline water could accumulate in people with kidney conditions. Also, if the body becomes too alkaline, a condition called metabolic alkalosis could cause side effects like nausea, muscle twitching and confusion. This article explains how artificial alkaline water differs from natural alkaline water, and why the latter is preferred.

So should I drink it?
As I mentioned, it is generally considered safe to consume. However, it is NOT to be used as a treatment for any health condition. Furthermore, it shouldn't be consumed too often or in too much high quantities so as to upset the body's normal pH levels. Unlike the concept of healing crystals, which also faces skepticism but is harmless, alkaline water can end up having negative effects on your body if misused.

Given all that has been said, in my opinion, I'd wait for there to be some more conclusive studies on it before jumping on the alkaline water bandwagon just yet. I have tried it (there's no difference in the taste), but I haven't drank it consistently. What about you? Have you tried it? What was your experience? Let us know below.

Stay peaceful,
Lexxie

    1. People have gotten ill. I guess it was misuse, but I mean, I don't see the point of it. Maybe ban it until it's proven safe and beneficial, at least
